Does Lumion save backups of Projects/Scenes and Imported Model files?

Lumion 9 and newer include a few recovery mechanisms that may help recover file changes if Lumion was closed unexpectedly or if you accidentally moved away from a Project without saving.

1. Backup and Recovery

If Lumion is not closed correctly while you are working on a Project, you should be able to Restore it the next time you start Lumion again.

For this to happen, you need to start Lumion via the Windows Start Menu or a shortcut. Do not try opening the .LSF Project file via Windows File Explorer.

If a Recovery File is available, Lumion will offer you the choice to restore it when starting up again:

Important: Do not click on Discard on the Recovery window if you want to restore the Project, otherwise the recovery data is permanently lost. 


2. Quicksave

Lumion also has a QuickSave system. A QuickSave file is created when you open a different Project while another Project is already open. If this was accidental and you forgot to save your changes, Lumion stores the previous Project’s latest data as a QuickSave file.

QuickSave files can be recovered from the Load screen. They are shown with a clock icon and use a different file extension (.LQF).

  

QuickSave data is stored in the: Documents\Lumion\Projects folder, and can remain available even after Lumion is closed. However, it is replaced if you continue opening different Project files.

For that reason, if you see a QuickSave file that contains work you need, open it as soon as possible and then use Save As to save it as a normal Lumion Project file.

 

3. Safety Practices to avoid losing work

The systems described above are not a replacement for regularly saving your Project and making manual backup copies. We also strongly recommend making regular backups of all the files you and Lumion have saved (Click here to see where to look), ideally on a different hard drive and/or to online data storage. Other recommendations include:

  • In Lumion, using Save As frequently to make a separate copy of the LS Project file as a version copy. They can then be compressed as .ZIP so that they occupy less space.
  • Use backup or file sync software.
  • Windows File History and/or
  • An online cloud backup service (so long as it does not back up at the same time as you are trying to save files).
  • Regularly save a Material Set of your materials editing.  See our article:
