How to request and manage a Lumion Faculty License Key?
For Instructors and University administrators
Lumion offers a free Faculty License to eligible educational institutions so educators can teach students architectural visualization on university computer labs. This article covers who's eligible, how to request the license, what documents we need, how to deploy and manage the license, and how the renewal process works.
Key details:
- A Lumion Faculty license is valid for 3 years. After that, administrators can easily renew it as long as they still represent an educational institution.
- Not for commercial use. Projects saved in the educational version cannot be opened in commercial versions of Lumion
- Their use is for university computer labs only. If students want to use Lumion on their own system, they must request a Student License Key instead.
- These type of licenses are Floating License Keys, meaning they do not need Seat assignment to access Lumion. However, admins or students still need to sign in to their account when Lumion is started.
Requesting a Faculty License
The very first step is to make sure the Lab PCs meet the system requirements before requesting a license. Once you have confirmed that, head over to the following webpage and fill in the form (For educators, faculty administrators, and IT staff at universities and colleges only):
The form will collect your institution details, contact information, and number of PCs.-
Lumion Website: Lumion for Faculties
An official signed letter or authorization document from your institution (as a PDF or clear image) is required. It should be on institutional letterhead and include a clearly visible official stamp, logo, or seal. The letter should mention the Lumion Faculty License by name.
Your request will be routed to your local Lumion reseller, who will review it and respond based on availability.
Typical response time is a few business days. Once approved, you'll receive a Welcome Email with your license key and full deployment instructions.
Note: If you are unsure how to verify system requirements, send us a Diagnostics Report of one of the machines in your request.

Managing a Faculty License
Once the license has been issued, there are a few steps to complete to get things up and running:
Step 1: Download and Deployment
Create a Lumion Account and log in to download the Lumion Installer:

Once the Installer is downloaded, run it and enter the Activation Code (found in your Lumion Account) to install Lumion on a PC. It is also possible to silently deploy the installation on multiple PCs at a time. Here's how:

We recommend following this procedure to avoid having to download the installation files on each PC.
Step 2: Set up access to Lumion
Since Lumion 2025.1, users are asked to sign in when Lumion starts. In a shared computer lab, the license should therefore be locked to each PC.
This ensures that the Faculty License Key remains assigned to the computer, regardless of which Lumion Account signs in. This prevents students from accidentally selecting their personal Student License Key or changing the license used on the lab PC.
Please follow these instructions on each PC:

How do you lock a Lumion License Key to a PC?
Once the license is locked, you can manage sign-in in one of two ways:
Option A) Students sign in with their own Lumion accounts
Students can create a free Lumion Account to sign in and out of Lumion without affecting the Faculty License Key assigned to the PC. Their Lumion accounts do not need to have any license registered. The account is used only for identification and access to supported Lumion Cloud features.
This option is suitable when students have a fixed lab computer, already have individual Lumion Accounts or need access to their own Cloud content.
Option B) Keep the faculty administrator signed in
An administrator can sign in once on each PC. Lumion will remember the account so students can start the application without signing in individually or having to create an account at all.
This works best when all students use the same shared Windows user account. Lumion sign-in information is associated with the Windows user profile, so it may not be remembered when students use different Windows accounts. If your lab uses individual Windows accounts, each student may still be asked to sign in.
Important: A Faculty License Key belongs to the educational institution, not to individual students. Do not share the Activation Code or License Key number with students.

Step 4: Annual Check-In and 3-Year Renewal
To keep the Faculty program healthy and prevent abuse, we have two lightweight lifecycle touch-points.
Once a year you'll receive a short email asking three quick questions: is the Faculty License Key still in active use, is the Seat count still accurate, and has the license moved to a different lab. A one-line reply is enough. If you don't reply within 30 days we'll send a reminder; if we don't hear back after 60 days, the license may be flagged for review.
At the 3-year mark you'll receive a renewal request. To continue using the Faculty License Key, you'll need to resubmit fresh verification documents: an updated institutional letter, an updated dxdiag file if hardware has changed, and confirmation of current seat count and admin contact. Renewal is free. If we don't hear back within 60 days after the renewal request, the license can be deactivated.
If your license is ever deactivated for missing renewal, you can reactivate it later by sending fresh verification documents. Reactivation resets the 3-year clock.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How long does approval take?
A few business days once we have all four required verification documents. Missing documents are the most common cause of delay, so please prepare everything before you submit.
Q. My country isn't listed on the request form. Can I still apply?
Yes. Submit the request through the general form; we'll review and route it appropriately. Availability may vary in a small number of markets, if the Faculty program isn't currently available in your country, we'll let you know.
Q. Is there a minimum or maximum number of seats?
We can issue a minimum of 5 Seats and maximum of 50 Seats per Faculty License Key.
Q. Can I use the Faculty License at home for course preparation?
The Faculty License is for institution-owned computer lab PCs only. If you need to prepare materials at home, the recommended path is to use a Lumion Pro trial or a Student License (if you're also a student), or discuss with us whether an educator-specific arrangement is possible in your case.
Q. What happens to my projects if the Faculty License is deactivated?
You'll still be able to open the saved project files in an educational edition of Lumion if the license is reactivated later, but they cannot be opened in a commercial Lumion license.
Q. Can students log in with their own Lumion accounts on the lab PCs?
They can, but for Lab environments, we recommend that the license is locked. The Lock License feature is designed to avoid students changing the license when logging into Lumion. Another option is to log in with the admin account on all PCs so that the students do not need to log in at all. Learn more below:

How do you lock a Lumion License Key to a PC?
Q. The Lock License login gets reset when Windows users are swapped. Is there a fix?
This is a known limitation and there's no fix at this time.
Q. My students want to use Lumion at home, should I share the Faculty License Key with them?
No, please don't share the Faculty License Key with students. Students should apply for a Student License Key, which is designed for personal-device use:
