How does the License System work?

Lumion has two types of License Keys. The main difference is how their Seats are shared and how users receive access:

  • Floating License Keys: Seats are shared and used as needed.
  • Named-user License Keys: Each Seat is assigned to a specific user.

A Seat determines how many people can use Lumion at the same time. It does not necessarily determine how many computers Lumion can be installed on.


👥︎  Floating (Lumion Pro only)

A Floating License Key provides a shared pool of Seats that can be used by different people and computers.

Each time Lumion Pro is started, it uses one available Seat. When Lumion is closed, that Seat is automatically released and becomes available to someone else. For example, a three-Seat Floating License Key allows Lumion Pro to run on up to three computers at the same time.

Key points:

  • Seats are not permanently assigned to individual users.
  • Lumion Pro can be installed on multiple compatible computers.
  • The number of Seats determines how many computers can run Lumion Pro simultaneously.
  • The same Lumion Account can be used on multiple computers at the same time, provided the registered License Key still has available Seats.
  • Floating License Keys are well suited to teams, shared workstations, computer labs, and organizations whose users regularly change computers.

 👤︎ Named-user (Lumion Pro and Lumion View)

A Named-User License Key assigns each available Seat to a specific person and their Lumion Account.

The License Key administrator manages access through the User Management section of their Lumion Account. The administrator enters the user's email address, assigns an available Seat, and the user receives an invitation. The user must sign in with the invited Lumion Account to access Lumion. For example, a two-Seat Named-User License Key can have up to two assigned users at a time.

Key points:

  • Each Seat must be assigned to an individual user.
  • Only assigned Users can access the product. 
  • The license administrator can invite, remove, or replace users within the available Seat limit.
  • Administrators must also assign themselves a Seat if they want to use the product.
  • Named-User License Keys cannot be manually registered to a Lumion Account using the License Number or Activation Code.
  • This license type is well suited to organizations that need centralized control over exactly who can access Lumion.

Identifying License Types
  • If the name of the license contains STUDIO  (LUMSTUDIO for example), it is a Floating License Key.
  • If it contains LUMVIEW, it is a Named-User License Key.
  • If it contains NU (LUMIONNU for example), it is a Named-User License Key.
  • If you are a student, it is a Named-User License Key.
  • If you are a Trial user, it is also a Named-User License Key.

All other License Keys are floating (including, Faculty, Perpetual, and others).

1. For Lumion View and Lumion Pro subscribers

1.1: Lumion View and Lumion Pro (Named-User) subscriptions have named-user access. The License Key needs to be assigned to specific users who can use their Lumion Account credentials to access the products. More information is available below on how to assign users:

1.2: You can assign a number of users to a License Key equal to the number of Seats owned.

1.3: If a user logs into multiple machines in Lumion View, the user will be logged out of previous instances.

1.4: If a user logs into multiple machines in Lumion Pro, the user will receive a prompt saying that 'No Seats are available' and will have to log out from the previous session.

 

2. For Lumion Floating subscribers

Lumion Pro has Floating License (previously known as Studio) access.

 

2.1 Lumion View access

2.1.1: Lumion View has Named-User access. The License Key needs to be assigned to specific users who can use their Lumion Account credentials to access the product. More information is available below on how to assign users:

2.1.2: You can assign a number of users to a License Key equal to the number of Seats owned.

2.1.3: If a user logs into multiple machines, the user will be logged out of previous instances.

 

2.2 Lumion Pro access

Lumion Pro comes with a Floating License Key.

2.2.1: How it works:

  • The Lumion License Key is installed on your PC as an integral part of the installation files. The License Key can be swapped or changed in Lumion 2025.0 and newer by running Lumion as an administrator, opening the settings and pressing Reset. This is not possible for versions 24.4.3 and older! 
  • If the License Key was purchased as an individual, you may install Lumion on as many computers as you want, provided that all of the computers belong to you.
  • If the License Key was purchased as a company, you may install Lumion on any computer that belongs to the company. However, if the company has multiple branches that operate as separate legal entities, those branches must purchase their own Lumion License Keys.
  • The number of Seats for the License Key determines how many PCs you can use Lumion on at the same time.
  • You still need to log in to your Lumion Account order to start Lumion 2025.1.0 or newer. More on that below:

 

2.2.2: How can you use Lumion on more than one PC at the same time?

If you want to use Lumion on more than one PC at the same time, there are two options:

2.2.3: Buy a License Key with multiple Seats:
This is usually a more flexible solution if you need to run Lumion on many different PCs. There's only one Installer (Download Manager) and a corresponding set of installation files for this License type.

After installing Lumion on your PCs, the license system will lock one Seat when you start up Lumion on a PC and unlock the Seat when you shut down Lumion again on that PC.

Important: If you are considering merging your License Keys into a single one with more Seats, please note that this process is not available.

2.2.4: Buy a separate License Key for each PC:
This License type means that there is a separate Installer and separate (unique) installation files for each license that you buy. In other words: you'll need to download the (unique) installation files for each License Key and install each version on your PCs.

The Lumion License System then ensures that you can't run more than one instance of Lumion for your License Key. We do not recommend this License type if you have more than 1 License Key and you need to use Lumion on many PCs. In most cases, it is far better to purchase a License Key with multiple Seats.

 

3. For Perpetual License Key owners

 

Note: Lumion will no longer be available by purchasing a Perpetual License Key as from 14 February 2023, 00:00 (Central European Time (CET), UTC +1),

3.1. Here's how it works:

  • The Lumion License Key is installed on your PC as an integral part of the installation files. It is not possible to swap or change the License Key of an already installed version of Lumion. 
  • If the License Key was purchased as an individual, you may install Lumion on as many computers as you want, provided that all of the computers belong to you.
  • If the License Key was purchased as a company, you may install Lumion on any computer that belongs to the company. However, if the company has multiple branches that operate as separate legal entities, those branches must purchase their own Lumion License Keys.
  • The number of Seats for the License Key determines how many PCs you can use Lumion on at the same time.
  • Lumion requires access to the internet and your License Key is checked when you start up and shut down Lumion, as well as when you use the MyLumion management portal.

 

3.2. How can you use Lumion on more than one PC at the same time?

If you want to use Lumion on more than one PC at the same time, there are two options:

3.2.1: Buy a License Key with multiple Seats:
This is usually a more flexible solution if you need to run Lumion on many different PCs. There's only one Installer (Download Manager) and a corresponding set of installation files for this License type.

After installing Lumion on your PCs, the license system will lock one Seat when you start up Lumion on a PC and unlock the Seat when you shut down Lumion again on that PC.

4. For Trial Users (Lumion View and Lumion Pro)

Both of these have named-user access.

5. For Educational Licenses

Lumion Student is Named-User based.

Lumion Faculty is Floating.
