Which laptop PCs do you recommend for Lumion 2023 and earlier versions?

1. General recommendations

Important: Laptop graphics cards have a performance that can be approximately 40% less than a similar model for a desktop.  For example, an RTX 3080 for desktop has a PassMark of about 25,335. An RTX 3080 for a laptop has a PassMark of about 16,674.

The first step in choosing a laptop for Lumion is to determine the specifications needed depending on your Project requirements, along with other criteria such as mobility.

1.1: Graphics card

High-end Requirements: 16GB+

Examples of High-performance Laptop GPUs that are capable of handling High-end Projects:

  • RTX 4090 Laptop GPU (16GB)
  • RTX A5500 Laptop GPU (16GB)
  • RTX 3080Ti Laptop GPU (16GB) 

Recommended Requirements: 10GB+

Examples of other High-performance laptop GPUs that meet the Recommended requirements:

  • RTX 4080 Laptop GPU (12GB)
  • Radeon RX 6850M XT (12GB)
  • RTX A4500/A5000 Laptop GPU (16GB)
  • RTX 3080 Laptop GPU (16GB) 

Examples of mid-range laptop GPUs that come very close to the Recommended requirements: 

  • RTX 4060/4070 Laptop GPU (8GB)
  • Radeon RX 7600M/7600M XT (8GB)
  • RTX A4000 Laptop GPU (16GB)
  • RTX 3070/3070 Ti Laptop GPU (8GB)
  • RTX 2080 Mobile (8GB)
  • Radeon RX 6700S/6800S (8GB)

Minimum Requirements: 6GB+

  • RTX 2060/2070/2080 Max-Q (6-8GB)

  • Radeon RX 6600M/6650M/6700M/6800M/6850M (6-12GB)

1.2: System memory

  • High-end requirements: 64GB+
  • Recommended requirements: 32GB+
  • Minimum requirements: 16GB+

1.3: Screen resolution

  • 1920x1080 pixels to ensure the best possible performance in Lumion.
  • Displays with a higher resolution will have a significant negative impact on the performance of Lumion.
  • If you are planning on using a 4K resolution screen (3840x2160) you will need a GTX 3080 graphics card (or better) for optimal performance.  Alternatively, please consider setting the screen resolution to 1920x1080 while using Lumion - or selecting a lower Editor Resolution on the Settings screen in Lumion.

1.4: Raytracing

Lumion 2023 now comes equipped with Raytracing capabilities, however, to use this feature, a graphics card that supports this technology is required.

Note that this is an optional feature. It's still possible to use Lumion 2023 even if your graphics card does not support Raytracing, you just won't be able to make use of this Effect.

 

2. Performance Levels for Laptops:

When considering a laptop, please check the PassMark for the graphics card at PassMark Software: High End Video Card Chart.  And see our notes in 1. General recommendations (above).

Here is a partial list of the highest-performing graphics cards for laptops (according to their PassMark score as of February 25, 2023).  The PassMark will change but the general order of performance may still be the same.

3. Laptop product suggestions:

These suggestions were updated on February 2023.

Some laptops can be configured with different components.  For example, if there is 32GB of System Memory (RAM) you might be able to increase it to 64GB.  See a retailer's website near you.

Some retailers such as ASUS, also have some models that can be configured for the graphics card.
