Model import guidelines for Autodesk Inventor

mceclip0.png

Please note that Lumion does not officially support Autodesk Inventor.

1. Method A: Export a '.DWG' file

1.1: Export your Autodesk Inventor model to a '.DWG' file and import it in Lumion:

File -> Export -> '.DWG'

Or you might want to use a secondary workflow of Autodesk AutoCAD with the DWG model and LiveSync for AutoCAD.

2. Method B: Export a '.OBJ' file

If method A does not work as expected, please try exporting your Inventor model to a '.OBJ' file and import it in Lumion:

File -> Export -> '.OBJ'

3. Tips & Troubleshooting

3.1:  Textures do not import with the model?

The Obj model will export with the mapping data using a '.MTL' file.  This holds a reference to the materials including the files for the textures.  Those textures might be saved in the same or a separate sub-folder to the '.Obj' file.

  • In Lumion, edit the surface using the Material Editor and change the Color Map for the texture by loading the required file.
  • It is possible to edit the '.MTL' file in a text editor and amend the path references to the texture files.  However, for most users, use Lumion to update the model.

3.2: Why can't you see the model after importing and placing it in your Project?

  • The Insertion Point for the Imported Model in Lumion corresponds to 0,0,0 in Inventor.
  • If a model is far away from the Insertion Point in Lumion, you need to move the model closer to 0,0,0 in Inventor, before exporting it to Lumion.

3.3: Why can't you assign a Lumion material to individual surfaces?

  • Lumion will always combine surfaces that use the same material in Inventor. If you want to assign a Lumion material to a specific surface, you must assign a unique material to that surface in Inventor before importing the model.
