For versions earlier than Lumion 2025.0 see this article:
- Knowledge Base: How do you migrate to a newer version up to Lumion 2024?
Important: please make sure you do a SaveAs for any LSF Project file before you start any work on the Scene. See Section 2: Project Files and 2.1: To save for Lumion 2025.
1. Background:
Lumion 2025.0 introduces a completely new file structure for all data/file types.
Those include the LSF Project file, the Imported Model files (4), Custom Materials, Material Files, Effect Stacks saved as a file, etc.
This is all done under the hood and you should not notice anything other than the improvements in file load, file save and some file size, with future improvements still to occur. It is very important for this version to clearly have different folder locations than prior versions.
Lumion 2025 will create a new Default set of folders in the Documents\Lumion 2025, folder location.
You can still change that location, however, please do not set it to any earlier version folder such as Documents\Lumion (for Lumion 2023 and/or Lumion 2024) or wherever you had set the location of Lumion 2024.
- Knowledge Base: How do you change the location of the Lumion-documents folder?
Important: Lumion 2025 data is not backward compatible. Please do not try Loading Project files or Imported Models saved in Lumion 2025 in an earlier version.
If you want to transfer your files and settings from an older version of Lumion to Lumion 2025, please follow the instructions below.
2: Project Files
Project file extension for Lumion 2025: LSF.
Project file extension for Lumion 2023 or 2024: LSF.
Project file extension for Lumion 12.5 and older: LS[major version number] for example LS12.
Lumion 2025 will Load a Project file from prior versions.
2.1: To save for Lumion 2025
When you want to save a Project for the first time in Lumion 2025, Lumion will require it to be saved using SaveAs.
Please ensure you provide a different file name.
And do not use the same name as the prior version file name. Doing so would overwrite the older file and you will no longer be able to Load the Project in an older version (should that need arise).
Then make sure to close the file (use Create New) or close Lumion. Then open the Project file you saved using SaveAs.
2.2: Please note that:
-
Important: File data is not backwards compatible to an earlier version.
If you save a Scene or an Imported Model in Lumion 2025, you cannot load the files in older versions of Lumion. - Changes in versions sometimes mean that some features are not supported or have changed in newer versions of Lumion.
- After transferring your Imported Models and Scenes to a newer version, you may need to reset or adjust certain things like Photo or Movie Effects to match the way the current Lumion version works (applies mainly to very old Projects, Lumion 6 and earlier).
3. Files in the Lumion-Documents folders
3.1: Copy All Folders
To keep things to a few simple steps, copy all folders from the location of your old version over to the location for Lumion 2025.
See also Section 6. Transfer files.
Then see Section 7 and 8.
3.2: Option from 3.1: choosing which Folders to copy across
3.2.1: Library
This folder contains the four files for each Imported Model. It's the folder with most of the files and file size.
If you Load a Project file, the Imported Models are unpacked and a local copy is made in this folder so that you can make edits and update the model prior to it being saved in Project file.
Any files updated in Lumion 2025 will be saved in the new Lumion 2025 format.
3.2.2: GroupLibrary, Materials
For any Groups or Custom Materials you have saved to disk and via the Lumion interface.
Transfer/copy the old version files over to the new Lumion 2025 folders, if needed.
See Section 6. Transfer files.
3.2.3: Miscellaneous, Recent Projects, Projects
The files in these folders are maintained only by Lumion.
3.2.4: Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous files are created when a Project is Loaded and contains Sound or Video Textures and Lumion saves a local copy as a cache. No need to transfer to Lumion 2025
3.2.5: Project folder
Contains only the most recent QuickSave of a Project. Lumion maintains this when closing out of one Project to another. No need to transfer to Lumion 2025
3.2.6: Recent Projects
A file for the thumbnail and location of a Project file you have Loaded and edited in Lumion.
If you want to keep the history when you were working in an earlier version, then copy the files in the old version folder over to the Lumion 2025 folder.
See Section 6. Transfer files.
6. Transfer files:
6.1: Make sure the Folders are made
If not done so before then open Lumion 2025.
Doing so will create the required folders for Lumion in the Lumion-Documents folder.
If you have changed the Lumion-Documents folder location in the Settings screen then open Lumion to create the folders.
6.2: Close/quit Lumion.
6.3: Copy* the required folders: all (see 3.1) or individual (see 3.2) (provided that they exist):
Documents\Lumion [OLD VERSION] to: Documents\Lumion 2025
* If for some reason, you require the old version files, then use Copy(Copy and Paste). If not, then to save file space you can use Move(Cut and Paste).
7: Materials Conversion for Lumion 2025 and newer:
Lumion 2023 and newer includes a major revision of the Materials System and requires all prior version Materials to be converted before use.
This also applies to Lumion 2025.
This is done in two ways:
7.1: Library folder
For all files in the Documents\Lumion\Library folder and sub-folders that have not yet been converted.
On opening, Lumion will automatically do the conversion. You will see a screen with a message like this:
Please wait for the conversion process to complete. But see also Skip Conversion (below).
In some cases, if there are many files and/or high-resolution texture maps then the process might take some time. Update 23.1.0 significantly improves this conversion process.
Any files that you copy through to the \Library folder at some later stage, will also be converted the next time you open Lumion.
7.1.2: Skip Conversion
It is possible to skip the conversion at any time, by pressing [Esc]. The next time when Lumion is started it will continue with the remaining items in the \Library.
7.2: Projects from Prior Versions
If you load a Project saved in an earlier version then Lumion will automatically convert the materials on the fly when opening and loading the Project.
Once you save that Project in Lumion 2025 then there is no need to convert next time it is opened.
The converting screen is not shown or needed for this.
8. Favorites
To transfer your Favorites from the Imported Model Library and the Lumion Model Library, please:
- Copy the file settings(Version).ini from Documents\Lumion (OLD VERSION).
- Rename it to settings(NEW VERSION).ini.
- Place it in Documents\Lumion (NEW VERSION) folder.
Example: Transferring your favorite objects and materials from Lumion 12.5 to Lumion 2025.
- Quit Lumion and copy Documents\Lumion 12.0\settings12.ini.
- Rename the copied file to settings25.ini.
- Move the copied file to Documents\Lumion 2025\ and restart Lumion 2025.
